Ukrainians who found refuge in Sweden at the beginning of the full-scale war had to issue temporary protection. Currently, the validity of the document is coming to an end, so it is important to extend it in time. Learn how to do it
Citizens of Ukraine who have left for Sweden since the beginning of the full-scale war will soon have their residence permits expire. However, do not despair - the document can be extended. We will tell you how to do it.
When and how should I apply for the extension of my residence permit?
Yes, refugees from Ukraine can extend temporary protection. The application must be submitted in the electronic service from February 1 to March 4, 2023. For this, you do not need to attach any documents or copies of passports.
You must enter a number for everyone who wants to apply (you can apply for yourself and two other adult family members and up to ten children under the age of 18 for whom you are the legal guardian). The number to be entered in the application can be found on the residence permit map or in the upper right corner of the decision issued by the Migration Service.
The number you need:
After you apply, all family members who plan to renew their residence permit must visit the Migration Service in person to have their photo taken and fingerprints taken to obtain a new residence permit. The record of acceptance is made in the electronic service when the application is submitted.
How to use the electronic service to apply for a residence permit in Sweden?
Yes, in order to use the electronic service and submit an application for extending the validity of the permit, you must have:
- email address;
- mobile phone number;
- case numbers of all persons for whom you are submitting an application (we wrote about it in the section above).
If you submitted a similar application last year, then you can use the same email address and password as you did then.
Attention! It is important to submit the relevant application on time - i.e. no later than March 4, 2023. If you don't, you will have to reapply for protection, housing and financial support. If you apply too late, you will not be able to work until you receive a new decision.
After submitting the application, you will receive an email confirming that the application was submitted on time. It will also list the names of all the people you submitted it for. In addition, the letter will contain a reference number, by which you can check whether you have received a decision.
You also need to check whether you have received a decision on your application (in English).
A letter confirming the appointment for photography and fingerprinting should be sent to e-mail. You need to arrive at the appointed time for this procedure.
Also, each of the family members who submitted the application will receive a receipt stating that it was delivered to the Migration Service. I will send you the receipt a few days after applying for the residence permit. You need it to provide the public service or employer with confirmation that you have applied for the extension of your residence permit in a timely manner.
When will I know that the decision on the application for the extension of the residence permit has been made?
As soon as the decision is made, it will be sent to the e-mail address you indicated. If your temporary protection is extended, you will need a new card. It should be mailed after you are fingerprinted and photographed.
Will financial aid and housing be available to you?
If you have received or applied for a residence permit, you must be provided with housing assistance and financial support. You are also entitled to other support from Swedish society, such as school education for your children and certain medical benefits.
In order to receive the specified assistance, it is necessary to apply to the Migration Service, even if you previously organized your own accommodation or provided for yourself financially. If you are leaving Sweden but have returned, it is important that the Migration Service knows that you have returned to Sweden so that you can receive the benefits you are entitled to.
We will remind you! Sweden provides refugees with temporary protection: housing, benefits, access to work and medicine. Read what you need to know about the rules for moving to Sweden in our material.
