Austria is about to expire the period of preferential highway travel for owners of cars with Ukrainian license plates. Soon, Ukrainian motorists will have to pay a road toll. All the details are in this article.
The period of preferential travel expires on April 30, which means that starting from May 2023, Ukrainians will be obliged to pay the road toll (Vignette).
It is noted that the payment of the road toll is made by purchasing a Vignette (a sticker placed on the windshield of a car).

How long can I drive a car with Ukrainian license plates in Austria?
If the vehicle is used by people from Ukraine with the right to reside in the country, it is not yet necessary to register this car. However, vehicles with Ukrainian license plates and registration can be used by refugees in Austria for one year. However, this period is interrupted with each departure from the federal territory (from Austria) and starts anew with each entry into its territory.
If you have your primary residence in Austria, you can voluntarily register your vehicle. However, in this case, you must comply with the legal requirements and provide the necessary evidence.
Do Ukrainians need to change their driving license?
According to EU Regulation 2022/1280, starting from July 27, 2022, it is no longer necessary to exchange Ukrainian driving licenses for those of an EU country. Ukrainians who have been granted temporary protection can continue to use their Ukrainian driving license without exchanging it or taking a new driving test as long as they have temporary protection status.
We remind you! The right to reside in Austria for Ukrainians is confirmed by an identity card for displaced persons (Blue Card). You can find out how to extend your legal stay in the country here.
