Ukraine has been resisting Russian aggression on its territory for almost two weeks now, and every screen broadcasts international leaders’ speeches about the values Ukraine is fighting for. What are these values, that unite all citizens of our country, both inside and outside of it? What unites us with the Europeans and why do they understand our struggle? Let's try to answer these questions.

First of all, let's talk about the most important value - life. This is what makes our existence meaningful, without which it loses its sense. From a legal point of view, the right to life belongs to the first generation rights, that is, it arose first and is a prerequisite for all rights. The Constitution enshrines this right, which testifies to Ukraine's choice of European natural and legal values.

This unites us with Europe not only in words but also in deeds: sites for assistance in accommodation and humanitarian support for Ukrainians seeking asylum are now operating throughout Europe. At the same time, this very value cannot be discussed in the context of Russia, which starts not the first war in the last 30 years, after the demise of the Soviet Union. During the war with Ukraine, Russia does not even take the bodies of dead soldiers to give them to their families for burial.

The second extremely important value is democracy. In today's world, it is considered in a broad sense and combines such important things for every member of society as the right to elect representatives of power, the right to freedom of speech, freedom of choice, etc. This is exactly what has become crucial since the year when the Revolution of Dignity took place on the Independence Square in Kyiv, and this is exactly what still kindles the fire in the hearts of Ukrainians. We can forget about these important things in Russia, where power was actually transferred to the president by the predecessor, and journalists, under criminal liability terror, are forbidden to tell the truth.

When we say that the Europeans and our nation are united by common values, we are talking about these most important things for our people: the values of life and democracy. This is what inspires us, gives impetus to further development, and gives us the strength to fight.

European politicians recognize the European future of Ukraine. Here is what Ursula von der Leyen says in an interview with Euronews: “Our values are shared in this country, our principles are protected there. Ukrainians want to live in a peaceful democracy, and Russia is attacking it. Therefore, Ukraine deserves our full solidarity, and it will see it.” The head of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael Roth, in an interview with Deutschlandfunk radio station also notes that Ukraine's accession to the EU will not take place quickly, but Ukraine deserves a clear membership perspective.
