Registration of a car in the register of foreign vehicles (REVE)

The demand to register Ukrainian cars will become effective on May 22. From that day on, all cars with Ukrainian license plates must be registered in the REVE register and receive a European license plate. This plate will be valid until the expiration of the temporary residence permit in Italy (Permesso di soggiorno per protezione temporanea).

Foreigners without a residence permit can drive an unregistered car within a year from the day of crossing the Italian border.

Those Ukrainians who have become residents of Italy, should also legalize their transport. They have three months to do this from the date of acquisition of resident status.

How to exchange a Ukrainian number plate?

A driver can get new plates at CIA offices. Italy also allows Ukrainians to get new documents for a car at the Embassy of Ukraine.

Foreigners can also apply for REVE registration at the State Vehicle Register (PRA) or through the electronic counter of motorists (STA). After signing up, the driver will receive a certificate to show to the police during the document check.

Exchange of Ukrainian driver's license

After a year of residence in Italy, Ukrainians must exchange their driver's license. Firstly, driver need to contact the Motorizazzione Civile - the branch of the Italian vehicle inspection, and submit the following documents:

  • Application;
  • A receipt for the payment of state duty;
  • A copy of the taxpayer number (Codice Fiscale);
  • A copy of the international passport;
  • Driver's licenses issued in Ukraine and their translation;
  • A medical certificate received no more than three months ago;
  • A photo no older than six months.

Usually, the procedure for exchanging takes 30 days. After receiving the Italian certificate, the Ukrainian one will be withdrawn.

Car insurance in Italy

The rules in Italy do not differ from other EU countries. Therefore, all vehicles must be insured. The easiest and most reliable way for a Ukrainian is to take out a Green Card policy.  This insurance policy guarantees compensation to a third party in the event of an accident and is characterized by maximum convenience in registration.

Follow the link, provide the necessary information, and the policy will be sent to your email within a few minutes.
