Recently, the consumer group Which? conducted a study comparing the prices for renting hotel rooms and the price of booking an apartment through the Airbnb service. The study was conducted among the 13 most popular tourist destinations in the UK and 37 other countries. The Independent reports that the analysis was based on the average cost of rooms and apartments for the annual period from May to May next year.

Hotels Vs Airbnb: price comparison 

Airbnb is a popular online platform for finding temporary housing around the world. Renting a room, apartment, or even a whole house can sometimes be more profitable and comfortable than staying in a hotel room. 

However, the study found that the average cost of staying in a hotel room is less than renting an apartment through Airbnb. The average cost of staying in a hotel room for one person for one night is about $125. At the same time, the average price for renting an apartment through Airbnb is about $148 per night. 

"Most tourists may be surprised, but the average cost of hotel rooms in popular destinations is cheaper than renting a one-bedroom apartment through Airbnb, which is positioned and advertised as an ideal option for travelers who want to save money. When planning a vacation, check prices on different platforms. However, for large travel groups and families who need more rooms, private apartments are likely to be more cost-effective than a hotel," comments Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel magazine.

Rooms, apartments, and suites offered on platforms such as Airbnb can be cheaper than more conventional types of accommodation because there is no need to pay for staff. 

However, experts point out that during the coronavirus pandemic, renting private apartments has become more popular, which has provoked a rise in prices.

A study by Which? named specific tourist destinations where you can save a lot of money by choosing to stay in hotel rooms rather than private apartments. 

● Santorini, Greece. The price of renting an apartment from Airbnb and Vrbo is much higher than the price of hotel rooms. Thus, a stay in a private apartment costs an average of $251, while the price of a hotel room is about $147;

● Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Private housing is 58% more expensive than a hotel room: 226 dollars versus 143 dollars;

● Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai. Renting private housing through the Airbnb service is almost 85% more expensive than hotel rooms;

● Southwold, UK. As in other popular tourist destinations in the UK, the average price of renting a hotel room is less than the price of renting private housing through Airbnb: $192 versus $276.
