Germany's largest airline Lufthansa is launching a subsidiary, City Airlines. According to Avianews, the carrier will start operating medium-haul flights in the summer of 2024. It will include new connections between key airports, in particular, between Munich and Frankfurt. The subsidiary carrier City Airlines is expected to "drive" people to the starting points of Lufthansa's long-haul flights.

Why does Lufthansa need a new carrier?

The publication notes that the launch of the subsidiary is probably due to the German airline's desire to reduce staff costs. However, the airline has not yet made any relevant statements.

"Competitive strengthening of the medium-haul network is important for the Lufthansa Group's market positioning and the planned growth of the long-haul segment in the German market," Lufthansa justified the launch of the new airline.

At the same time, it is known that recent years have been a challenge for the airline, as its sustainability has suffered from repeated strikes by crews demanding higher wages.

What will change for Lufthansa passengers?

City Airlines' fleet is to be replenished with Airbus A319 aircraft used by Lufthansa itself, so passenger comfort will remain at the same level. According to the publication, the parent airline may start transferring such aircraft to the subsidiary carrier's fleet and open recruitment of pilots and flight attendants, but with lower salaries.

It is noted that passengers will hardly notice the difference between City Airlines and Lufthansa. After all, both airlines will have similar liveries, the crew will wear similar uniforms, and passengers will receive identical service at the airport. In addition, you can book tickets for the City Airlines flight on the main Lufthansa website.

We remind you! In the first half of 2023, more than 26 thousand foreigners from Germany entered Ukraine. Read more about who they are and why they are coming to Ukraine despite all the risks associated with the russian invasion in our previous article.
