Today, December 6, Ukrainians celebrate the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - a holiday of the best, strong and indomitable soldiers who, despite hell, stand strong and protect the lives of every Ukrainian.

The AFU is developing and becoming stronger and stronger every day. According to the ranking of the international company Global Firepower, which evaluates the power of the army, this year the Ukrainian army took 15th place among 145 participants, although last year it was 22nd.

Given the importance of the Armed Forces for Ukraine, this day can safely be called the main national holiday.

We talk about the history and significance of Armed Forces Day below.

History of the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The professional holiday of all servicemen and women of Ukraine is celebrated precisely on December 6, because on this day in 1991 the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law "On the Armed Forces of Ukraine".

The holiday also coincides with the beginning of the First Winter Campaign of the UNR army in 1919, the main task of which was to maintain the presence of the Ukrainian army on the territory of the state through partisan actions. Mykhailo Omelyanovych-Pavlenko led the five-month campaign.

Who is part of the Armed Forces?

The Armed Forces are divided into three main types of troops: Ground Forces, Navy and Air Force. Certain types of troops are also separately distinguished: Special Operations Forces, Airborne Assault Forces, Territorial Defense Forces, Communications and Cyber Security Forces, Medical Forces, and Logistics Forces. Each of them has its own professional holiday, but December 6 unites all military personnel of Ukraine.

The meaning of Armed Forces Day

Since the day of its foundation, more than 30 years ago, Ukrainians have met the Day of the Armed Forces with pride and honor. However, this day gained special significance in 2014, when Russia launched armed aggression against Ukraine, occupied Crimea and tried to seize Donbas. Then the soldiers of the Armed Forces boldly met the enemy and repulsed him in the east of the country.

However, this holiday gained national significance after the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine.

Today, for the second time, the Armed Forces of Ukraine celebrate their day in the conditions of a great war, every day choosing Ukraine's right to sovereignty, independence and a free life.

Usually, on Armed Forces Day, it is customary to hold ceremonial awards, celebratory concerts and schools, but in wartime, such events can threaten the safety of our soldiers. Therefore, all events have been canceled again this year.

Also, since 2009, on December 6, the Bohdan Khmelnytsky Prize has been awarded for literary, artistic and journalistic works on military topics.

On this day, do not forget to donate to the needs of the Armed Forces, because support and unity are very important, especially in the most difficult times.

The Visit Ukraine team thanks the brave soldiers of the Ukrainian army, who firmly hold the enemy's blow and mercilessly beat the enemy, steadily bringing victory closer. We wish everyone to return home as soon as possible. Eternal memory to those who gave their lives for Ukraine and our future. Their exploits, struggle and sacrifice should never be forgotten.

Glory to the Armed Forces of Ukraine!

Glory to all the Heroes!

Glory to Ukraine!
