According to the Central Register and Information on Economic Activity, the number of sole proprietorships of Ukrainian citizens in Poland increased by 67% compared to 2022. According to ukrayina.pl, citing Rzeczpospolita, in 2023, more than 10% of new entrepreneurs in Poland were registered by Ukrainians. Thus, every tenth registration of a new individual entrepreneur was made by a citizen of Ukraine.

How many companies have Ukrainians opened in Poland?

Before the full-scale invasion, Ukrainians in Poland registered about 200 individual businesses per month. In the spring of 2022, their number increased from 600 to 1700. In the following months, Ukrainians registered 2,000 sole proprietorships, and in 2023 their number reached 3,000 per month.

Thus, as a result of a steady increase in the number of registrations, Ukrainians opened 30,325 new Ukrainian individual companies in Poland in 2023. In total, in 2022-2023, Ukrainians registered 48,464 sole proprietorships in Poland.

Why do Ukrainian citizens register companies in Poland?

This is primarily due to the fact that there is a shortage of employees in Poland. At the same time, economic experts note that the Polish authorities should do everything to ensure that Ukrainians stay and continue to develop their business, as the country needs their taxes. And polls show that Poles do not see a threat in the fact that Ukrainians are opening businesses en masse. Thus: 61% do not see Ukrainians as a threat, and only 27% of Poles are worried about competition with Ukrainian businesses.

Thus, the most popular industries in which Ukrainians open their own businesses are: construction, IT, services, and trade. After all, this is where there is a shortage of workers. At the same time, Poland remains favorable in terms of location and business.

How to open a sole proprietorship in Poland?

In order to register a sole proprietorship in Poland, you need to be legally resident in the country and have a PESEL tax identification number. To open a sole proprietorship, you need to apply to the commune office or create a company through the CEIDG portal (Central Register of Business Activities). To open a different type of business, you need to contact the KRS (National Court Register) in online or offline format.

It should be borne in mind that in order to register your own business in Poland, you will need to go through 10 consecutive stages, including

– selection of the form of ownership and preparation of the charter and authorized capital

– applying for registration in the business register, obtaining a REGON number, opening a bank account and registering with the State Treasury Service;

– obtaining a NIP tax number and registration as a VAT payer;

– company insurance;

– making a company seal.
