The Slovak government intends to consider extending temporary asylum for Ukrainian refugees until March 2025. This is reported by the documents of the Cabinet of Ministers, rokovania.gov.sk reports.

Temporary asylum certificates (dočasné útočisko) valid until March 4, 2023 will automatically remain valid until March 4, 2024.

In the explanatory note to the draft resolution, it is proposed to determine that the provision of temporary asylum in Slovakia will be extended until March 4, 2025.


As you know, in September 2023, the Council of the European Union extended the temporary protection mechanism for Ukrainian refugees until March 2025. This mechanism allows Ukrainian citizens to legally stay in the EU and use healthcare and education services, have access to the labor market, housing and social benefits.


At the end of 2023, 4.2 million Ukrainian citizens were registered in the EU countries and granted temporary protection.

Ukraine is trying to bring refugees back


In particular, diplomats claim that Ukraine is actively cooperating with EU officials to tighten migration rules in order to return refugees back to their homeland. 


Kyiv is holding talks with EU representatives to ensure the return of more Ukrainians next year.
