Transnistria asks russia for protection: does this mean the beginning of a war against Moldova?

At the so-called congress of deputies in the unrecognised 'Transnistrian Moldovan Republic', they decided to ask russia for protection from 'Moldova's pressure'. What does this mean and how does the rhetoric of the Transnistrian separatists resemble the statements made by the DPR and LPR militants before the start of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine?

Transnistria's appeal

The statement of the pseudo-republic's congress of "deputies" says that Moldova has "unleashed an economic war", which has caused Transnistria's budget to suffer a multi-million dollar deficit, and refuses to negotiate with Tiraspol.

Therefore, the so-called deputies decided to turn to russia as a "guarantor and mediator in the negotiation process". It is worth noting that Transnistria also sent its appeal to the OSCE, the European Parliament, the UN and the Red Cross.

It asks international institutions to "influence the leadership of Moldova to return to an adequate dialogue and stop violations of the rights and freedoms of the residents of Transnistria".

Transnistria also proposes to appeal to the participants of the international negotiation process in the "5+2" format, where the parties to the conflict will be representatives of Moldova and the TMR, russia, Ukraine, the OSCE as mediators, and the EU and the US as observers.

Somewhere we have seen this before

It is worth noting that before the outbreak of a full-scale war between russia and Ukraine, representatives of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics also asked for help from russia. However, at the time, they called for help "to repel Ukraine's aggression and prevent a humanitarian catastrophe".

As we recall, these kremlin puppets did not initially ask for the deployment of russian troops either. But the appeal served as a pretext to escalate the situation.

In the case of Transnistria, the situation around the region has also been escalating for quite some time, and everyone has long been talking about dictator putin's desire to create a "corridor" to connect russian territory with the occupied territory of Moldova. This can only be done through the seizure of all the southern regions of Ukraine.

In other words, given the PMR's rhetoric, the situation in the region is already shaky and can only get worse over time.

Will there be no war in Moldova for now?

The situation with Transnistria's appeal has already been commented on by the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine. In a commentary to RBK-Ukraine, DIU representative Andriy Yusov said that the PMR's request to russia for protection from Moldova was not the outcome the kremlin expected.

"Today, given the situation in the "PMR", nothing happened. russia did not get the desired result. In this situation, their efforts, both political and informational, have been defeated", Yusov stressed.

The DIU representative noted that an active disinformation campaign about Transnistria's plans to ask russian dictator vladimir putin to join russia indicates that "there was an interested party".

He also pointed out that Transnistrian MPs had also appealed to European institutions. This was deliberately done "in a multi-vector style". Such an action is "an eloquent fact in itself," Yusov said.

Moldova also had time to comment on the PMR's appeal. Government spokesman Daniel Vode said that the congress and its decisions do not pose a threat. He called the event a purely propaganda event that does not deserve tense headlines in the media.

It is worth noting that in recent days, Transnistria has been mentioned more and more often in society, as information appeared online that the region would ask to join russia.

However, then Ukrainian intelligence made a statement about what was happening. They noted that, according to their information, the deputies of the unrecognised PMR do not plan to ask dictator putin to join russia at their congress.

In addition, they explained that the information disseminated bears all the hallmarks of a deliberate disinformation campaign aimed at destabilising the situation in the region.

We remind you! russian special services are conducting a special operation to destabilise the situation in Ukraine. The operation is called Maidan-3. We will tell you when to expect its culmination and how it should end here.
