Cars subject to London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) rules can be donated to Ukraine instead of being scrapped. Find out how to donate a car for the humanitarian and medical needs of Ukrainians in exchange for a grant payment
London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who had previously opposed the transfer of used cars to Ukraine, said that starting March 15, 2024, British citizens can donate them to Ukraine as humanitarian aid instead of scrapping them.
According to The Guardian, quoting the mayor, this applies to cars subject to London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) rules.
How can a car be donated to Ukraine instead of being scrapped?
According to the current rules, applicants can receive a grant payment for scrapping or modernizing an ineligible vehicle. The payment is a one-time payment of up to £2,000.
At the same time, starting from March 15, applicants can donate UK-registered vehicles for humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Such cars will be transferred to the Ukrainian authorities on a permanent basis for humanitarian and medical needs.
Those who donate their car, van or minibus will also be able to receive a grant payment.
"Car owners will be able to donate vehicles in exchange for a payment of up to £2000, which is available to drivers who scrap their vehicles," said Sadiq Khan.

It is also noted that Transport for London has partnered with British-Ukrainian Aid, a charity registered in the UK, to enable this scheme with the support of the Ukrainian Embassy. The charity will facilitate the transfer of vehicles.
To donate a car to Ukraine, you need to submit an application to British Ukraine Aid, after which the request will be reviewed and, if approved, volunteers will take the car that does not meet environmental standards from the owner.
"Ukraine wants the same high air quality as we do, but if you are fighting for your life, this is not your immediate priority. The point of these vehicles is that they will save lives," said Richard Lofthouse, a member of the Car for Ukraine volunteer initiative.
The London Ambulance Service also plans to join this effort by donating 50 decommissioned ambulances to Ukraine.
