The European Commission has recommended that Ukraine be granted candidate status for accession to the European Union. This decision was made on June 17 in Brussels.

"We recommend granting Ukraine candidate status, realizing that a number of important reforms will be carried out in the country. Ukraine has clearly demonstrated its commitment to European values ​​and standards. And before the war, it had started the path to the EU," said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

Also, according to the President of the European Commission, Ukraine already meets about 70% of European rules, norms, and standards. But at the same time, Ursula noted that our country has yet to carry out a number of reforms regarding the rule of law and the fight against corruption. The European Commission has provided Ukraine with a list of requirements that must be met before negotiations on full membership in the EU begin, said the head of the OPU Andriy Yermak. Among the requirements: the fight against the oligarchy, changes in the judiciary, and reforming the law enforcement sector.

Denmark has supported Ukraine's candidate status, although until recently it was thought that the country was against it. But Foreign Minister Eppe Kofod said that if the European Commission decides on Ukraine's candidate status, Denmark will not object. The Swedish government also supported Ukraine.

Ursula von der Leyen also said that the candidate status would be recommended for Moldova, but Georgia will be denied for now.

The final decision on granting Ukraine the status of a member of the EU will be made on June 23-24 in Brussels at the summit of EU leaders.
