EU recognizes Ukrainian driver's license: what you need to know about the validity of certificates
Table of Contents
Ukrainians, forced to flee the war to the EU countries in their cars, do not have to worry about revalidating their national driver's licenses in the host country. The Ukrainian driver's license will be considered valid in the EU member states without the need to go to a driving school and take a new exam to get a European driver's license.
The corresponding decision was approved by recent agreements.
Firstly, Ukraine and the EU signed an agreement on road transport liberalization. Better known as "transport visa-free", it already recognizes Ukrainian driver's licenses.
Secondly, the European Parliament accepted the proposal of the European Commission on the recognition of Ukrainian national licenses in EU member states. The decision has yet to be approved by the EU Council. After that, it will officially take effect.
Previously, Ukrainian driving licenses were valid in the EU, as a rule, for 6 months from the date of entry. After that, it was necessary to exchange Ukrainian licenses for a new European-style certificate, having passed an exam at a driving school in the host country.

❗️ Important to note
This decision does not apply to vehicle registration. Ukrainian license plates are subject to exchange for European ones if you stay in the EU for more than a year.
However, at present, this procedure in most European countries is either free of charge, or its cost has been significantly reduced for Ukrainians. For information about the rules for registering a car in a particular country, you should contact the local police and social protection authorities.
Recall that a European-style driver's license can already be obtained in Ukraine: for this, you need to contact a service center of the Ministry of International Affairs and exchange the old license for a European-style one.
