Continuation of temporary protection status in Estonia. What are the conditions?
The temporary protection status for Ukrainians who have arrived in Estonia since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine is expiring. But it can be extended - we will tell you how to do it below.
Conditions for extending the status of temporary protection in Estonia
According to Eda Silberg, Vice-Chancellor of the Ministry of Culture, a refugee must have a registered place of residence in order to apply for the extension of temporary protection status. Adult refugees must either be employed or registered with the Unemployment Office as unemployed. Minor migrants must go to kindergarten or school in Estonia.
In addition, every Ukrainian who wants to extend the term of temporary protection must undergo an adaptation program.
It consists of a one-day training on life in Estonia and a basic Estonian language course lasting 100 academic hours, which is approximately three months.
At the end of the course, students will have a basic knowledge of Estonian and know how to describe the environment, talk about themselves and their family, ask and answer simple questions.
If all conditions are met, the status of temporary protection for Ukrainians will be extended for another year. The corresponding status guarantees refugees the same rights as other residents of Estonia.
Where can I find information about the extension of temporary protection status?
Information on the extension of temporary protection status will be sent to the e-mail from the Department of Police and Border Guard. It is possible to ask for an extension of the status, not before receiving such a letter.
How to renew a residence permit in Estonia online?
Recipients of temporary protection will be able to renew their residence permit online. For this, a request must be submitted in the self-service environment at asylum.politsei.ee.
Pay attention! A request for the extension of a residence permit can be submitted no more than 3 months before the expiration of the residence permit.
When renewing, you will need to specify the personal code, residence card data and registered place of residence in Estonia. In some cases, additional data or a visit to the service hall may be required - then the person will be contacted personally.
As of December 4, 40,814 people applied for temporary protection in Estonia. From December 10, another 17,142 people will be able to apply for the extension of their residence permit.
