How to change residency in Berlin for Ukrainians with temporary protection: detailed instructions
The majority of Ukrainian refugees who continue to stay in Germany rent their own housing. According to the law, when you change your place of residence, you must also change your registration. Learn more about how to do this
Thousands of Ukrainians with temporary protection currently live in Germany, in particular, in Berlin. As you know, all foreigners, without exception, must have a residence permit in order to legally reside in the country. Currently, many refugees are changing their address, moving into apartments and houses. In such a situation, a change of registration is also mandatory. About how to change registration, what documents are needed for this and other important nuances - further in the material.
Residence in Berlin: registration procedure
In Germany, there are two types of residence permit, depending on the move itself:
• Anmelden - if you change the municipality;
• Ummelden if your move is within the municipality.
After you have moved into your new home and signed the lease, the landlord will issue you a document called Wohnungsgeberbestatigung, which will serve as confirmation of the fact that you live at this address. Together with the document, you need to visit the Bürgeramt (the so-called department for citizens' affairs), where you can get an appointment for registration.
Pay attention! According to German law, you are required to change your residence permit within 2 weeks of moving to a new residence.
Failure to comply with this rule is subject to a fine of 1,000 euros. But at the moment, due to the large number of people who have arrived in Germany, it is enough only to have time to get a residence permit within the first 2 weeks.
Residency in Germany is called Meldebestatigung. Registration takes place in the Burgeramt, in the Kundenzentrum department, and costs 12 euros for each family member. Currently, registration is absolutely free for Ukrainians. But keep in mind that all family members, even children, must be present at the residence registration procedure.
Employees of the department check the validity of your documents and enter all information into the database. The procedure of extracting from the previous place of residence is automatic.
What documents are required for a change of residence in Germany?
• Passport;
• Residence permit;
• Completed Anmeldung registration form;
• Wohnungsgeberbestatigung - certificate from the landlord.
Additional actions after the change of registration
Remember that after changing your place of residence, you must notify the relevant services - Jobcentre, Sozialamt, Familienkasse, insurance company, gym, school, kindergarten, etc. of your new address.
It is important not to neglect this point, because in this case all correspondence will come to the old address.
At the same time, the German post office solved this problem and started offering citizens a forwarding service called Nachsende. The cost of the service is affordable, and you can fill out an application for it at the post office or online.
We will remind you! Earlier we talked about BAföG social assistance in Germany for Ukrainians. The rules of receipt and who can count on funds - see the link.
