Deutschlandticket: what has changed?

Due to the introduction of new standards for traveling to the European Union, the rules for the German travel ticket will be slightly changed.

Starting from August 15, the so-called Deutschlandticket will no longer be a regular travel card, but will be considered a special offer with a reduced fare.

Changes in the rules will affect the rights of passengers in the event of a transport delay. Previously, people who faced delays in regional trains for a long period of time, which meant missing the connection to the final station, could freely transfer to EC, ISE or IS transport. However, according to the innovations, from now on, passengers will be able to make this transfer only under special conditions, namely if the cancellation involves the passenger's arrival at the final destination with a final connection after midnight. In all other situations, transfers to other high-speed connections are not provided.

"It is not at all clear why passengers cannot transfer to higher quality trains free of charge in case of delay, because this is how it works with other travel cards," comments Ramona Pop, a representative of the German Consumer Association.

It is also noted that from now on, passengers who previously traveled by regional trains to travel to a station from which they can get on an ICE train will no longer be able to count on reimbursement in case of a regional train delay, even if this leads to a delay in the required ICE transport.

Another clause in the new rules stipulates that if Deutsche Bahn trains are delayed due to extreme weather conditions or situations beyond the control of the operators, the company will no longer pay compensation for train delays.

It is noted that in 2022, the level of train delays at Deutsche Bahn was the worst in the last 10 years.
