Traveling abroad: what items are allowed and prohibited to be transported across the Ukrainian border
Persons planning to cross the border of Ukraine should know the items prohibited for transportation. This will help to avoid problems. Find out more about the list of items that can and cannot be transported across the Ukrainian border with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova
When crossing the border, everyone passes customs control. Border Patrol agents check travelers' luggage for prohibited items, as many countries have restrictions on what you can bring into the country, including food, pets and medicine. Even over-the-counter drugs may be prohibited for importation. In order to avoid problems during the inspection, it is necessary to know the list of permitted and prohibited items, which each country establishes independently.
Ukraine borders Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova. The customs rules of these countries are in our material.
Rules for passing customs control in Poland
● What is forbidden to import into Poland?
- meat and meat products;
- meat-based preserves (both homemade and store-bought);
- milk and dairy products;
- bars of pure chocolate, except for one open bar per person;
- narcotic drugs;
- weapons.
● What is allowed to be imported into Poland and in what quantity?
Poland has approved a list of products that can be imported into the country, but in limited quantities:
- fresh fruits and vegetables, except for raw potatoes (up to 5 kg per person);
- fish and products containing it (up to 5 kg per person);
- eggs and products containing eggs (up to two kilograms per person) - one kilogram can contain from 14 to 25 medium-sized eggs;
- coffee (up to 500 grams per person) and tea (up to 100 grams per person);
- honey (up to 2 kg per person)
- candies and any confectionery in which the content of milk and chocolate does not exceed 20%;
- baby food mixtures (up to 5 kg).
Products containing tobacco - it is allowed to import only one item from the following list:
- cigarettes - 40 pieces;
- cigars weighing up to 3 grams - 20 pieces;
- cigars – 10 pieces;
- smoking tobacco - 50 grams.
Alcoholic drinks - strong alcohol (over 22% alcohol content) - 1 liter; drinks with alcohol content up to 22% - 2 liters, wine - 4 liters, beer - 16 liters.
● Rules for importing medicinal products into Poland
Without a prescription, you can carry drugs that do not have a strong effect: painkillers, anti-injection pills or vitamins, for more serious drugs you need a prescription: tranquilizers, psychotropic substances, etc.
Medicines containing codeine or ephedrine - "Nurofen Plus", "Ketanov" and "Bronholitin" - are prohibited to be imported into Poland, as well as into other EU countries, although they are widely distributed medicinal products in Ukraine.
Therefore, in order to avoid problems at customs, be sure to familiarize yourself with the composition of the drug before departure. For the importation of prohibited drugs, you can receive punishment in the form of confiscation and a fine for an administrative violation.
If you undergo a course of treatment with the above-mentioned medicinal products, you need to go through the declaration procedure, for this, submit the following package of documents:
- a copy of the medical card;
- a prescription for medicine from your doctor;
- a check from the pharmacy (where you bought the medicine);
- a certificate (with the diagnosis, the name of the drug and its required amount, the period of administration at the time of the trip) certified by the seal of the medical institution with the signature of your doctor and the head doctor.
The permissible import volume of medicinal products is 500 milliliters.
● Equipment that can be imported into Poland without declaration
One person can freely bring into Poland: a mobile phone, a photo or video camera, a portable speaker.
If you are transporting more than one piece of equipment, you must go through the declaration procedure.
● Punishment for violation of customs rules in Poland
When a violation of the rules for transporting things across the Polish border is detected, Polish customs officials may:
1. Confiscate prohibited items.
2. Impose a fine of 50 euros per unit (alcohol is counted in bottles, and cigarettes are counted in blocks).
3. Deport and ban entry to EU countries for 5 years (applied as a last resort).
Rules for passing customs control in Hungary
● What is forbidden to import into Hungary?
- meat and any meat products;
- meat-based preserves (both homemade and store-bought);
- milk and dairy products;
- undeclared weapons.
● What is allowed to be imported into Hungary and in what quantity?
- pasta and cereals (up to 5 kg);
- coffee (500 grams) and tea (100 grams);
- sugar (up to 20 kg per person);
- baby food (for personal use up to 5 kg);
- fuel canister no more than 10 liters;
- other goods worth up to 300 euros.
Products containing tobacco - cigarettes - 40 pieces or papyrus weighing no more than 3 grams - 20 pieces or cigars - 10 pieces or 50 grams of tobacco.
Alcohol:
- strong alcohol (over 22% alcohol content) - 1 liter,
- drinks with an alcohol content of up to 22% - 2 liters;
- wine - 4 liters;
- beer - 16 liters.
● Rules for importing medicinal products into Hungary
You can transport painkillers, anti-injection pills or vitamins without a prescription, but for tranquilizers or psychotropic drugs, you must have a prescription and go through the procedure of preliminary declaration at customs.
To import drugs that contain codeine and ephedrine, you must have: a copy of the medical card, a prescription for the drug from your doctor, a check from the pharmacy (where you bought the drug), a certificate (with the diagnosis indicated for taking the drug and its amount, the date of administration at the moment trips) certified by the seal of the medical institution with the signature of your doctor and the chief doctor.
● Equipment that can be imported into Hungary without declaration
Any second-hand equipment, for example: telephones or watches - one or two units intended for personal use, worth up to 300 euros.
● Punishment for violation of customs rules in Hungary
If Hungarian customs officers detect a violation, they can:
- confiscate prohibited items;
- oblige to pay customs duty for undeclared goods;
- deport and ban entry to EU countries for 5 years (as a last resort).

Rules for passing customs control in Slovakia
● What is forbidden to import into Slovakia?
It is prohibited to import the following into Slovakia:
- products with a short shelf life;
- meat products, including lard, sausages and canned goods;
- dairy products;
- chocolate candies;
- seeds, fruits, live trees and other plants.
Shoes and toys (not for personal use), lottery tickets, jewelry and large quantities of precious metals are also prohibited.
● What is allowed to be imported into Slovakia and in what quantity?
- long-term storage products for personal use;
- coffee (up to 500 grams per person) and tea (up to 100 grams per person);
- baby food (for personal use for the first time);
- perfumes (up to 250 milliliters);
- fuel canister (up to 10 liters).
Products with tobacco content - 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigars, each weighing a maximum of 3 grams, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco.
Alcoholic beverages – 2 liters of strong alcohol (over 22% alcohol content), 4 liters of wine, 16 liters of beer.
● Rules for importing medicinal products into Slovakia
Medicines for personal use only (worth up to 430 euros per person) can be transported. Without a prescription - pills with a weak effect (painkillers, anti-injection tablets or vitamins), drugs with a strong effect (tranquilizers or psychotropic substances) only with a prescription and with a prior declaration.
As in Poland, it is forbidden to import drugs containing codeine or ephedrine ("Nurofen Plus", "Ketanov", "Bronholitin", etc.).
● What equipment can be imported to Slovakia?
Any equipment can be imported into Slovakia, but only for personal use and in the amount of no more than one unit. Equipment worth more than 500 euros must be declared before crossing the border.
● Punishment for violation of customs rules in Slovakia
- confiscation of prohibited items;
- a fine (the amount depends on the severity of the violation);
- deportation and ban on entry to EU countries for a period of 5 years (applied as a last resort).
Rules for passing customs control in Romania
● What is forbidden to bring into Romania?
- meat and any meat products;
- meat-based preserves (both homemade and store-bought);
- milk and dairy products;
- soil, seeds, seedlings, coniferous bark or bamboo;
- unregistered feed, veterinary drugs;
- undeclared weapons.
● What is allowed to be imported into Romania and in what quantity?
The quantity of any goods you bring to Romania should not indicate that they are being imported for sale.
- personal belongings: clothes, shoes, personal jewelry, cameras and video cameras, accessories, portable musical instruments, portable radios, portable television sets, personal portable computers;
- food for long-term storage (in small quantities and only for personal use);
- other goods for personal use or as a gift worth up to 300 euros;
- fuel canister up to 10 liters.
Products containing tobacco - it is allowed to import only one item from the following list:
- cigarettes - 40 pieces;
- cigars weighing up to 3 grams - 100 pieces;
- cigars – 50 pieces;
- smoking tobacco - 250 grams.
Alcoholic drinks - strong alcohol (over 22% alcohol content) - 1 liter, drinks with alcohol content up to 22% - 2 liters, wine - 4 liters, beer - 16 liters.
● Rules for importing medicinal products into Romania
You can transport non-strong pills without a prescription, but strong drugs with a prescription and prior declaration (in writing).
● What equipment can be imported to Romania?
- One photo or video camera, one portable TV, sports equipment for one person.
- One baby and one wheelchair, if there are no children or people with disabilities among the passengers. If there are, then the number of special vehicles should be equal to the number of children or persons with special needs.
- Two portable music centers, telephones, computers, watches, two e-books.
- Three flash drives.

- confiscation of prohibited items;
- a fine (the amount depends on the severity of the violation);
- deportation and ban on entry to EU countries for a period of 5 years (this sanction is used as a last resort).
Rules for passing customs control in Moldova
● What is forbidden to import into Moldova?
- meat and any meat products;
- meat-based preserves (both homemade and store-bought);
- milk and dairy products;
- tree seeds and seedlings;
- undeclared weapons.
● What is allowed to be imported into Moldova and in what quantity?
- items for personal use - clothes, shoes, perfumes, cosmetics, hygiene products and medicines;
- knitted (3 units per person) and textile clothing (3 units per person);
- food for long-term storage (in small quantities and only for personal use);
- jewelry (up to 5 pieces per person);
- other property worth up to 300 euros.
Products containing tobacco - cigarettes made of tobacco and its substitutes - 200 pieces, any other up to 50 pieces.
Alcoholic beverages - up to 2 liters of wine, up to 5 liters of beer.
● Rules for importing medicinal products into Moldova
Without a prescription, you can carry mild pills, for example: pain relievers, anti-injection pills or vitamins.
If you undergo a course of treatment with prescription drugs, you must have with you: a copy of the medical card, a prescription for the drug from your doctor, a receipt from the pharmacy (where you bought the drug), a certificate (with the diagnosis indicated for taking the drug and its amount, the term reception at the time of the trip) certified by the seal of the medical institution with the signature of your doctor and the head doctor.
● What equipment can be imported to Moldova?
- 1 camera or video camera;
- 2 mobile phones;
- 2 pairs of glasses;
- 3 watches;
Other things intended for personal use, the value of which does not exceed the amount of 300 euros.
● Punishment for violation of customs rules in Moldova
- confiscation of prohibited items;
- a fine (the amount depends on the severity of the violation);
- deportation and ban on entry to EU countries for a period of 5 years (this sanction is used as a last resort).
