The Netherlands is considering an initiative that would oblige Ukrainian refugees to pay rent. Parliamentarians are determined to tighten living conditions for employed migrants from Ukraine, dutchnews.nl reports.

Ukrainians in the Netherlands will have to pay for housing: details

Refugees from Ukraine in the Netherlands have been granted a status equivalent to the rights of EU citizens, including the right to residence and employment. They receive financial assistance from the authorities in the amount of 280 to 380 euros per month to cover housing costs, which stops when they get a job. However, control over this process is difficult.

The rules also exempt Ukrainian refugees from paying health insurance, utility bills, and local taxes. Parliamentarians believe that those who have found a job should pay more from their own income.

Of the 100,000 Ukrainian refugees, one fifth live in the private sector, receiving an additional 93 euros per month to compensate their hosts.

"More than half of Ukrainians are working. This is extremely good progress. But I don't think it's fair that someone who works, earns an income and has free housing, shouldn't have to pay anything. An honest personal contribution seems reasonable to me," said MP Kasper Veldkamp.

According to the CBS statistical agency, 46% of Ukrainian refugees have found work in the country, and among third-country nationals from Ukraine, this figure is 77%.

Kati Piri, a member of parliament, noted that Ukrainians who work should pay for their accommodation, just like other categories of residents and refugees in the country.

We remind you! Earlier, the Netherlands announced the closure of the central reception center for Ukrainians, which played a key role in providing assistance and support to refugees. This decision came as a surprise to many, given the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the need for Ukrainians to seek asylum. Find out more about the conditions under which the reception center can be opened here.
