Buying a car in the Czech Republic can be an exciting experience for all car enthusiasts and beginners alike. The Czech car market offers a wide range of both new and used cars at competitive prices. Here's what you need to know when buying a car in the Czech Republic.

The first steps are always very important. It is important to decide on the type of car you want to buy. There are both local brands, such as Škoda, and many international manufacturers in the Czech Republic. Once you've decided what kind of car you're looking for, you can move on to the next step - finding the right one.

Where to look for a car in the Czech Republic?

The Czech Republic offers a wide range of cars, both brand new and used. If you choose a new car, you can buy it directly at a car dealership or from an official representative of the brand. For those looking for a more economical option, there are numerous online platforms in the country offering both new and used cars. These include car trading platforms, classifieds websites and electronic dealership catalogues.

AAA Auto - stands out in the used car market as one of the largest players not only in the Czech Republic but also in other Central European countries.

Auto ESA - is a proven platform in the Czech used car market. The company allows buyers to deal directly with the seller, bypassing any intermediaries.

Other platforms:

Buying a car in the Czech Republic: what documents are required

Despite the fact that Czech law does not require a purchase and sale agreement, it is recommended to draw up this document in the Czech Republic. The following information is required:

- data of the seller and the buyer (name, date of birth, place of registration);

- car data (VIN, registration number);

- date of sale;

- the amount;

- signatures of the parties.

When you buy a car, you must register it in the Vehicle Register (the exception is if you do not plan to stay in the country for more than 6 months). This can be done directly through the register or at the administration of any locality.

To re-register a car, you need:

- an application for re-registration;

- documents (ID card, residence permit or permanent residence, extract from the trade register or licence in the case of a legal entity)

- large technical passport;

- small technical passport;

- registration control protocol.

It is also important to pay attention! All cars in the Czech Republic and when travelling abroad must be insured. To do this, you will need to take out a Green Card insurance policy. The absence or delay of insurance is fraught not only with fines that are several dozen times higher than the cost of the insurance policy for a year, but also with the seizure of the car and deportation from the country with a subsequent entry ban. You can take out insurance for the required period on our website. Read more about the amount of fines in Europe for not having a Green Card here.

Driving a car from the Czech Republic to Ukraine

It is possible to drive a car to Ukraine. To export a car from the Czech Republic to Ukraine, the first step is to deregister it in the Czech registration system. This requires applying to the local government authorities for transit number plates. As part of the deregistration process, you will need to surrender the number plates in use and provide a number of documents, including the vehicle's technical passport, vehicle registration document, proof of technical inspection, and pay the required state fees for the provision of this service.

After obtaining transit number plates, the next mandatory step is to insure the car for the period when it will be used with these temporary number plates. Insurance is necessary to ensure the legality of using the car on the roads and to avoid problems with the law in the event of a traffic accident.

Before crossing the border of Ukraine, you will need to submit a preliminary customs declaration to the customs office where you plan to clear the vehicle (usually at your place of residence). At the same time, you need to pay the tax for the imported car to the customs service. After crossing the border, you need to arrive at the customs office for clearance and submit an additional customs declaration. If necessary, you will need to pay additional tax.

Can refugees buy a car in the Czech Republic?

Ukrainians enjoying temporary protection in the Czech Republic can buy a car in this country. However, they will not be able to obtain a standard licence plate.

Please note that a foreigner with temporary protection or a tolerance visa can be the owner of a vehicle registered in the Register of Motor Vehicles. However, in accordance with the Act on the conditions for the operation of vehicles on the road, the driver of a vehicle may be a person who has a permanent residence permit (trvalý pobyt), a long-term residence permit (dlouhodobý pobyt) or has been granted asylum (azyl) in the territory of the Czech Republic.

Ukrainians with temporary protection or a tolerance visa must register a car with "temporary number plates" for export. This registration must be renewed every three months.

The validity of such an export licence plate is not linked to the validity of the temporary protection or tolerance visa. In case of using the vehicle after the expiry of the registration plate for the export of the vehicle, the owner may apply to the authorised body for the issuance of a new registration plate of the same type.

We remind you! Road traffic accidents in the Czech Republic are quite rare, but a correct and consistent algorithm of actions can sometimes not only save your own money, but also save lives. Read here how to act in the event of a road traffic accident for drivers and those who have witnessed an accident on the road.
