Czech Republic changes rules for granting short-term asylum to newly arrived refugees

The Ministry of the Interior of the country warns Ukrainian refugees about upcoming changes regarding short-term asylum for newcomers.

From April 1, new arrivals will be able to stay only in the city of Ostrava, while until the end of March they will also be accepted at the center in Brno.

It is known that a short-term shelter is a place for temporary accommodation of people who have arrived in the country to apply for temporary protection, but have no place to stay until the Regional Center for Assistance to Ukraine (KACPU) has no working hours or until the issue of providing temporary protection and humanitarian housing is resolved.

Addresses of short-term shelters that are currently operating:

• Ostrava, Dr. Malého 1356/17 (tel. +420 771 288 779);

• Brno, Hněvkovského 30/65 (tel. +420 770 132 569) - until April 1.

Requests for humanitarian housing should be sent only to KACPU in Ostrava at the same address. Opening hours: Monday, Wednesday from 8:00 to 16:00, Friday from 8:00 to 14:00.

There, newcomers are referred to free accommodation throughout the Czech Republic, but refugees themselves do not have the opportunity to choose a region or type of housing.

For how long is housing provided for Ukrainians in the Czech Republic?

Humanitarian housing is provided for a period of up to 150 days, with the right to stay indefinitely for vulnerable categories of refugees. From September 1, 2024, the state will provide humanitarian housing for a maximum of 90 days to all categories of refugees.

Those refugees who do not need humanitarian housing must submit applications for temporary protection to the Regional Center for Assistance to Ukraine together with documents confirming the availability of housing with an officially certified signature of the property owner or person providing housing or an officially certified copy of the housing lease agreement.

We remind you! Earlier, we wrote that Ukrainian refugees in the Czech Republic may have to fulfill a number of conditions in order to stay in the country for a longer period of time. To do this, the country's authorities want to launch a special system. Find out what exactly it is about and at what stage the potential innovations are.
