The war in Ukraine and the Hamas attack on Israel have affected the fears of tourists around the world. What are they afraid of in 2024?

After the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, international tourism began to recover rapidly. This is evidenced not only by the number of travelers in Europe in 2023, but also by recent surveys, as people around the world are actively planning their travels for 2024.

Thus, according to the Global Rescue Winter Traveler Sentiment and Safety Survey, travelers are planning three or more trips in 2024. At the same time, 93% of respondents noted that they are planning to travel abroad (41% of respondents - three or more trips, 51% - one or two trips outside the country of residence).

However, despite the fact that the number and geography of trips are rapidly expanding, tourists' fears of traveling danger are also increasing, in particular due to events in the world.

Changing fears: what are travelers afraid of in 2024?

While a year ago, accidents and injuries were the biggest fear of travelers, as of March 2024, civil unrest and terrorism are the biggest fears of tourists. Thus, according to the survey, more than a third of respondents, namely 36%, reported that this scares them the most. It should be noted that compared to 2023, the level of fear in this regard has tripled.

"We are seeing an understandable increase in traveler anxiety around the world. However, international tourists still continue to travel despite the growing threats of civil unrest, war and terrorism," said Dan Richards, CEO of Global Rescue Companies.

Accidents and diseases remain the second biggest fear of tourists, according to 25% of respondents. For comparison, in the spring of 2023, the number was 50%. Among other things, tourists mentioned:

– robbery and theft (9%)

– trip cancellation (7%);

– COVID-19 infection (5%);

– natural disasters (5%);

– nuclear disasters (1%).

Attitudes towards travel safety: what has changed among tourists in 2024?

It is noted that tourists have become much more active in protecting their trips. In particular, by seeking security advice and evacuation insurance. Thus, more than a third of respondents (34%) said that the war in Ukraine, Hamas attacks on Israel, and other armed conflicts increase the likelihood that they will add security and advisory protection to their insurance policy.

The researchers note that the change in trends began with the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and intensified after the Hamas attack. At the same time, the demand for emergency medical care and security services is expected to grow, so 36% is not the final increase.

Remember that travel insurance within the country of residence and abroad is a guarantee of confidence and peace of mind for tourists. After all, an insurance policy will not only help you get high-quality medical care, but also save your own money in an unforeseen situation, for example, in case of a flight delay or loss of luggage at the airport. And given today's realities, insurance can literally save lives.
