Does Ireland plan to return Ukrainian refugees home: the government's response
Ireland has expressed its position on the possibility of returning Ukrainian refugees home while the war continues. Find out more about whether they intend to send Ukrainian refugees back to Ukraine
Ukrainian refugees who have taken refuge in Ireland will not be sent back home as long as the war continues. This position was expressed by Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, the Irish Independent reports.
The leader of the Irish government expresses hope that the European Union will extend the status of temporary protection for Ukrainians, if the situation requires it. At the same time, the conditions for Ukrainians to stay in Ireland in early 2024 have been subject to changes.
Here's what will change for Ukrainians in Ireland this year.
What should Ukrainian refugees who have been granted asylum in Ireland expect?
The EU Directive on temporary protection for persons fleeing the war in Ukraine expires on March 4, 2025. However, the European Union may adopt a new decision to support Ukrainian refugees in the future.
Varadkar emphasized that no Ukrainian refugee will be sent back as long as the conflict in Ukraine continues: "I cannot imagine sending anyone back to Ukraine until the war is over, until it is safe."

Noting that the war in Ukraine is raging in both frontline and rear areas, Varadkar emphasized the importance of considering the individual circumstances and safety of each refugee.
His comments were a response to the remarks made by the head of one of the Irish parties, Mary Lou MacDonald, who expressed some doubts about the right of unemployed Ukrainians to automatically stay in Ireland after the expiration of the EU directive.
It should be noted that since February 2022, Ireland has accepted more than 100 thousand refugees. Approximately 20 thousand of them have already returned home.
